Major Fire Hazard in Hospital, Rourkela, Odisha A newborn sustained critical burn injuries after the phototherapy unit of Om Appolo Hospital at the Civil Township under RN Pali police limits here caught fire  early on Saturday. With over 60 per cent burn injuries, the baby is now battling for life at Burn Care unit of Ispat General Hospital (IGH). Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH) In-charge Director R C Behera said the six-day-old baby was suffering from jaundice and undergoing treatment at the phototherapy unit. “The bassinet of the unit holding the baby caught fire due to some technical snag. The hospital staff immediately shifted the injured to IGH. However, they didn’t inform IGH staff about the incident, ” he added. Phototherapy involves the use of light to convert bilirubin molecules in the body into water soluble isomers that can be excreted out. When Behera visited the health centre along with police and Fire department officials, he found that its renewal for clinical registration had been pending since 2015. According to the Fire department, the private nursing home lacked fire safety measures and the Sundargarh district administration was recommended to seal it. Assistant Fire Officer Saroj Sahu said the health centre authorities did not inform them about the mishap and they learnt about the incident around 7.30 am from other sources. “During verification, we found the health centre did not have fire safety certificate and adequate fire-fighting equipment, ” Sahu added.
Fire Broke out at Puri Railway Station Coaching Depot. Puri: The Puri-Howrah Garib Rath Express (12882), had a narrow escape after a massive fire broke out at the coaching depot of the railway station here Wednesday. No casualty or loss of property was reported in the incident. The fire broke out at the waste dumping yard of the depot. Two fire brigades along with depot employees doused the flame. According to sources, depot works have been dumping waste like rubber, wire and other such at an abandoned place near intermediate overhaul (IOH) shed and sick railway line near the senior section engineer (carriage and wagon) office. Puri-Howrah Garib Rath Express (12882) was parked on the track at around 1pm when the fire broke out at the dumping yard. The fire began to spread rapidly towards the stationed train.  The depot employees immediately contacted the fire brigade. Meanwhile, employees contained the fire and prevented it from spreading further with the help of fire extinguishers. Two fire brigades also reached the spot soon afterwards and brought the fire under control. The stationed train was saved due to the presence of mind of the depot staff and quick action of the fire service personnel. According to sources, the depot that caters to repairs and maintenance of several trains does not have a proper waste management system.  Wastes like rubber, wires and plastic and other flammable items are dumped randomly around the railway station. It may cause a major mishap in future as well unless a proper waste management mechanism is implemented at the depot, sources added.
